Can Brushing With Essential Oils Help Cellulite?
By Caryn Anderson
Cellulite gives your skin a lumpy, bumpy
appearance that’s similar to cottage cheese. If you have it, you're not
alone -- approximately 10 percent of men and 90 percent of women are
affected by this condition. Cellulite is caused by a variety of factors,
including hormonal changes and poor circulation. Although topical
treatment with skin brushing and essential oils can't cure cellulite, it
can help make cellulite a bit less noticeable by improving your skin’s
overall appearance.
Brushing temporarily diminishes the appearance of
cellulite by improving the circulation in your skin and the the layer of
fat below your skin. Circulation plumps the skin to give it a smoother
look while minimizing lumps and bumps. Certain essential oils also
increase circulation in your skin; rosemary oil is believed to improve
circulation while strengthening blood vessels and promoting the renewal
of skin cells. There's no scientific evidence that skin brushing creates
lasting, permanent effects, but it can offer short-term benefits.
Applying essential oils to your skin offers
various benefits, ranging from aiding in detoxification to boosting
collagen production, which helps keep skin looking firmer and younger.
Among others, patchouli oil is reputed to minimize your body's retention
of fluid while improving skin tone. Additionally, skin brushing
stimulates your lymphatic system, which helps eliminate excess fluid and
remove toxins from your body.
Create your own blend with essential oils that
have cellulite-fighting properties. Some of the ideal options include
black pepper, geranium, basil, clary sage, fennel, cedarwood, juniper,
cypress, thyme or spruce -- all of which are helpful in tightening skin
and fighting cellulite. Since each works slightly differently, blending
them together can increase the oil's power. Additionally, keep in mind
that essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil such as jojoba,
avocado, evening primrose or apricot-kernel oil. Use a ratio of 2
milliliters of carrier oil for every one drop of essential oil. For
example, to make a blend with 20 drops of essential oils, you'll need 40
milliliters of carrier oil.
Choose a body brush with natural bristles and a
comfortable handle so that it’s easy to use. Start by applying a few
drops of your essential-oil blend, then brush your skin using
semi-circular strokes directed toward your heart. While you can just
spot-brush problem areas, you can also take a few minutes to brush your
entire body. Apply enough pressure to make your skin tingle slightly
without causing pain or discomfort. The best time to brush your skin is
before showering. Afterward, take your shower as normal and apply
moisturizer to your skin. For an added boost, massage a little bit of
your cellulite-fighting essential-oil blend into your clean skin.
- Do not brush inflamed or damaged skin, and do not brush wet skin, or it will sag, warns SecretsofpHBalancing.com.
- If you are pregnant, do not use any of the essential oils listed. Instead, substitute 20 drops each of lavender and cedarwood.
- According to SecretsofpHBalancing.com, skin brushing not only
relieves cellulite, but it also exfoliates skin, cleanses pores and
helps with overall rejuvenation of the body. Brush your entire body to
reap these benefits.
